ORGANIC, GRASS-FED BEEF

Grazing animals play an essential role in organic farming systems. We are constantly developing the grazing systems we use to work harmoniously within the local climatic and environmental parameters. We have a five-day rotational paddock grazing system, allowing each paddock to have a minimum of 40 days regrowth once it has been grazed. This means we always have a “feed bank” if we need it. Together with the wide variety of species within the ley, this system also ensures that each field has a constant, variable sward, that something is always flowering to feed pollinators and that there is continual habitat availability for small mammals, insects and birds. The inclusion of cattle within our system means that we create almost all the resources we need to grow arable crops, naturally, on farm.

A DIFFERENT BREED

On Launceston Farm we rear Stabiliser cattle; a breed we have identified as one which works well within the grazing system. The Stabiliser is a composite breed, a blend of five different native and continental breeds (Gelbvieh, Angus, Simmental, Hereford and South Devon), with specific attributes from each breed. Stabilisers are highly efficient at converting forage to protein, making them both a good choice when trying to improve our suckler herd profitability as well as an important choice as we strive to reduce the carbon footprint of our herd.
